While a clicking noise is normal for traditional electromechanical thermostats, there are several types of thermostats on the market today. Below are the signs of a faulty electromechanical thermostat.
Why Electromechanical Thermostats Click
Traditional thermostats detect changes in temperature with a metal coil relay that expands and contracts. When you set the thermostat, you’re actually setting the gap between the end of the coil and electrical contact. After the gap closes, the two magnetically connect, and you hear a clicking noise. When the two are in contact and you increase the setting of the thermostat, you can sometimes hear them disconnecting as well. This clicking sound is normal for this type of thermostat.
Electronic Thermostats
If you have an electronic thermostat, you shouldn’t hear the same type of mechanical clicking sound when it turns on your furnace. Instead, you might hear a mechanical noise from your furnace, which would also be a normal sound. Electronic thermostats detect temperature changes with more accurate sensors that don’t involve moving parts.
When Your Furnace Refuses to Start
When you hear the telltale click of your thermostat and your furnace doesn’t start, then there may be a problem with the thermostat or the furnace. If the furnace won’t start at all when you to reset the thermostat to trigger it, you should call a technician. The thermostat may not be working right, or your furnace may need to be inspected for electrical issues.
When Your Furnace Stays on or Switches on and off
A similar problem that can develop is a thermostat that doesn’t turn off your furnace, or it sends inconsistent signals that turn it on and off frequently. Both problems are usually caused by the thermostat. A loose wiring connection can cause false signals to reach the furnace, and a faulty coil can stay in contact regardless of temperature.
