Who Is Dave Lennox?
In 1895, Dave Lennox founded the furnace manufacturing company that eventually came to be known today as Lennox International. The same year, Lennox worked with Ezra Smith and Ernest Bryant to bring their plans of building a new and improved version of the furnace to life. Cast-iron furnaces of the 19th century were highly susceptible to warping and developing cracks, which could eventually allow smoke and gases from coal to enter the inhabited areas of a home or building. Smith and Bryants’ furnace plans replaced the traditional cast-iron heating surface with riveted steel. Smith and Bryant entered into an agreement with Lennox that called for Lennox to redesign the iron castings that would be used for the new furnace’s grates, fronts, and other parts. Eventually, Smith and Bryant lost their financial backing and were unable to pay Lennox for the castings. Lennox took over the partners’ patents and reworked the steel furnace’s original design and then remarketed the redesigned furnace.
Lennox’s redesigned steel furnace became wildly successful, and his contributions to furnace design greatly advanced the furnace in the areas of durability and efficiency. Today, Lennox International celebrates its founding pioneer by recognizing leaders in the HVAC industry with the Dave Lennox award.
