How Off Season Affects HVAC Maintenance

Savvy trip planners know that if you want to save a bundle on airfare and accommodations, you need to plan your trip for the off-season. For example, it’s far less expensive to spend a week at the beach in the fall or late winter when most kids are in school and the weather isn’t as warm. The reason for these lower prices is lower demand.

In so many areas in life, it’s important to take advantage of periods of lower demand to receive faster service and potentially better prices. The HVAC industry is one industry in which demand rises and falls seasonally in Murietta. Therefore, there are advantages to having work done during periods of lower demand.

Types of Seasonal Maintenance

Both furnaces and air conditioners need to be regularly maintained to operate efficiently. At We Care Plumbing, Heating and Air, we offer a comprehensive maintenance process that involves thoroughly checking each component of your HVAC system to ensure it’s ready for the upcoming extreme temperatures.

Air conditioner maintenance should be done when the weather is warm enough to test the air conditioner without damaging the equipment. After an overall check of the system to ensure proper operation, a technician from We Care Plumbing, Heating and Air will check the compressor, condenser, blower, thermostat, and any visible ductwork.

Within the compressor, the technician will check the exterior fins to ensure they’re clean and undamaged so that heat can be expelled efficiently. They’ll also check the motor and fan blades to ensure they’re operating correctly and aren’t surging or seizing in any way.

When checking the condenser, a technician is looking mainly for dust on the evaporator coil. Dust in this location can cause a variety of problems, so if any dust is found on or near the coil, the technician will carefully clean it off.

The blower should be free from damage and should turn easily without squeaking or scraping. It should also be free from dust since the furnace filter should be catching the bulk of the dust and debris that is in the air.

The thermostat needs to be accurate, a state which will be measured using a thermometer. The display should be uniform, and the battery should have a good charge. Additionally, all connections should be tight and all wiring free from abrasions.

Lastly, all ductwork should be sealed and free from any holes or rust.

Furnace maintenance can be done any time of year, though, for comfort’s sake, it’s best to do it when the weather is cooler. After checking to ensure that there is no carbon monoxide present in your home, the technician from We Care Plumbing, Heating and Air will perform other checks of the individual components.

Burners: The technician will verify that the flames are uniform on the burner. Additionally, they will ensure that the flames are blue, which indicates the complete combustion of the natural gas.

Heat Exchanger: The heat exchanger should be free from any cracks or rust. By shining a light on the exchanger, the technician will be able to check for any problems with these and other nearby components. If the heat exchanger is cracked, the technician will likely recommend the replacement of your furnace, as this component is expensive to replace on its own.

In addition to checking all electrical connections, the technician from We Care Plumbing, Heating and Air will also perform checks on the ductwork, thermostat, and blower, just like they do for air conditioner maintenance.

Timing of Seasonal Maintenance

When it comes to HVAC maintenance, there are two seasons that are considered “peak” — summer and winter. During the summer, struggling air conditioners tend to encounter problems that require repairs to keep homes comfortable. The same is true for furnaces in the winter.

Therefore, it’s best to time your HVAC maintenance or replacement to occur in the fall or spring. However, the further you get in these seasons, the longer you may have to wait, as other early birds will begin to increase the amount of business we receive.

Of course, if you experience a sudden problem with your system, then there’s no time like the present to have it corrected. If your problem occurs during a peak season, it’s a good thing to know, though, that with so many other people requiring assistance, your response may be delayed. This can leave you with an uncomfortable home for an uncomfortably long time.

Making the Most of the Off-Season

Scheduling maintenance at any time of the year is a great idea to help ensure the health and efficiency of your HVAC system. Scheduling maintenance during the off-season is particularly helpful, though. This is because off-season maintenance occurs before you begin running your furnace or air conditioner regularly.

This means that your system starts off in the best possible condition, allowing it to run efficiently, and putting less wear and tear on the system over the course of an operating season. Therefore, by doing all maintenance during the off-season, you can help prevent system failures that require extensive repairs.

Additionally, as mentioned above, when you schedule maintenance during the off-season, you don’t have to compete with as many people for an appointment. This makes it more likely that you’ll get a time slot that’s convenient for you and in a timeframe that expedites your maintenance.

When it comes to installation, the off-season is an especially attractive time to schedule this process. Since installation takes longer than simple repairs or maintenance, you’ll want to be sure that the technicians at We Care Plumbing, Heating and Air have plenty of flexibility in their schedule to get your system installed quickly and efficiently. This will put you in a great place as the extreme temperatures arrive, ensuring you have a brand new system to keep you comfortable.

If you are accustomed to the fastest service with no waiting, then the off-season is an ideal time of year to have your HVAC needs fulfilled.
